Mental Health First Aid training
Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Unfortunately, most people lack the confidence or are unaware how to offer assistance to those in need, instead turning a blind eye and dissasociating themselves.
Physical First Aid has been widely accepted in our communities and workplaces for decades, however mental health problems remain mostly unmentioned. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) gives people the skills they need to help someone who they are concerned about.
I am a MHFAider and a certified trainer for MHFA, and I have made it my mission to train as many people in the community and in workplaces as I can, with the aim of making Mental Health First Aid as important as Physical First Aid.
In the training, we will cover how to assist and respond to people who are facing a range of mental health challenges, including:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe psychotic states
- Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
- Aggressive behaviours and more
Like many working moms, my life is a juggling exercise with career, kids and relationships. I had been toying with the idea of starting a new business for two years. I’d start a few things and then lose focus, energy and enthusiasm. I was stuck until Barbara helped me. She is a great listener and gently challenged my assumptions and what I thought was holding me back. In just a few sessions, I have gained a better understanding of myself and renewed the vision of my business. And of course this had an onlowing effect into my relationship as well which is now so much more loving and understanding as I understand myself better. This time I have momentum to achieve what I want. thank you Barbara.
I can call Barbara my mentor. From the beginning she could read me like a book. She could see the issues associated with me and associated with my business. She was able to see big picture and I thank her for gently guiding me through changes that have greatly improved my business AND me and my relationship to my husband. Thanks Barbara!
Barbara has a very patient ear and her sharpness never failed to dig into exactly those issues I never wanted to look into. But I knew, if I wanted to save my relationship that was where I had to go to. And with Barbara’s gentle yet determined support I made the most interesting discoveries about myself – and my partner. we are back in love and so grateful that I took the step necessary – away from thinking I can deal with it myself and towards an understanding and supportive coach. Thank you –
“Hi Barbara, we just wanted to say a very big thank you to you for all the work you have done with us. When we decided to start working with you, it was like a lost straw we were clinging to. with your positive and optimistic attitude you convinced us very quickly that our relationship was more than just a boring entertainment with no chance for change. After working with you for 6 months I am happy to say that now we have found our excitement and joy for each other again and the intimacy we had lost for so long has returned in a way we both wouldn’t have thought possible – especially after so many years. thank you, thank you, we will recommend you and certainly come back if needed.” –

Barbara, I made it across to the UK and sat through 4 hours of turbulences, remaining completely calm. Unthinkable of before I met you. What you did is unbelievable and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will be back!!!
Hello Barbara, I wanted to let you know that finally, after so many attempts to change my habit of the coming-home-after-work-drink, I have now achieved it. I can’t believe that it really only took 2 sessions with you and your wonderful guidance to now not even thinking of that drink anymore and instead just be happy to be home. The thought that I used to have 3 shots every day after work just disgusts me now. Thank you sooooooo much.

Hi Barbara, I cannot believe I am finally free to step onto a plane and fly through the sky without having sleepless nichts days before and nervous breakdowns on the day of the flight itself. Having so far only been able to fly heavily medicated I am now able to look forward to the many holidays to come and am happily choosing which airline to go with next. I cannot thank you enough and will certainly spread the word. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

I was working with an HSC student preparing for her oral exam in Italian. She was challenged as she couldn’t really put together a single sentence in Italian and felt like everything just went “puff” when trying to recall it. I worked with her 2 days before the exam and here is what she sent me after the exam: “Gracie Barbara, it went really well actually… no big gaps or not being able to answer questions 🙂 Thanks so much!” K. Withnell. It only took one session of a special approach…
I thought Barbara was very approachable - light when she needed to be and had boundaries when those were needed. She covered all the material necessary and was honest if she didn't know the answer - and always came back with the answer the following week. She was a great facilitator and made everyone feel at ease throughout.
A lovely instructor who delivered the course in a very clear and engaging wayaking it very comfortable to ask questions.
